My name is Martha and I am a Form Six student at Langasani Secondary School in the Killimanjaro Region of Tanzania. I have almost reached the end of high school. The combination I am studying is HGL (history, language and geography). I am also a Year Two Kisa Scholar. I would like to tell you about myself, my life at school, and why I enjoy being part of the Kisa Project.
I am the fourth and last born in a family of four children, two girls and two boys. I was orphaned at a very young age. When I am not at school, I live with my uncle who has taken care of me since my parents passed away.
I start my day with a word of prayer for I believe that God is the beginning of everything. I give thanks to God for his protection and ask for his blessings. Then, I remind myself about my responsibilities and goals, as well as everything I have to do in order to reach my goals. I dream of becoming a lawyer, in order to fight for people’s rights, especially the weak and poor. Martha stays focused on her goals and dreams for the future because of Kisa.
I do some personal hygiene before walking out of my hostel in the morning. I love being smart in every way, so my uniforms are always clean and everything is in position. I then go to morning assembly for announcements from the school administration and the teacher on duty. After the morning assembly, I go straight to class, ready to learn new things from my teachers.
I always make a to-do-list the day before, or sometimes just after I finish my prayers. I like to prepare my whole day’s schedule, which is mostly based on my studies. My approach is to focus on a single topic from a specific subject each day. Martha learned to be organized from Kisa.
My regular classes end at 2:00 pm and I go get my lunch, then take a short break as I wait for the Kisa class to begin. Kisa only meets one day a week. On days that I do not have a Kisa class, I use that time to wash, work on my assignments, and chat with friends. Supper is always ready at 6:00 pm. After supper, I go back to the classroom for my private studies. I prefer quiet and cool places and my classroom is the best place. Sometimes, I prefer having a short discussion with a small group of friends for better understanding. Martha improved her study habits through Kisa.
The most fun moments in my day are when I am singing. I love singing – it makes me happy and brightens my day. Another highlight of my week is when I share ideas with my friends in Kisa. During Kisa, I learn different inspirational lessons that give me hope during hard times. Kisa has taught me to be resilient and persistent. It teaches me leadership skills in order to lead myself and my community. It makes me hope for the best future for me and my entire society. Martha became optimistic through her role model and Kisa Mentor.
Why do I like my Kisa Mentor, Lightness? First, because, like her name, she is optimistic. She gives me hope to move on with life. She has inspirational words, which make me march forward, strongly and purposefully, toward executing my goals. I believe that Lightness is an example of a powerful and successful lady. I hope that one day I will be just like her, having my own job and helping other women and girls in our society. We also share a love of singing!
Kisa Project is a two-year leadership course that prepares girls in their last two years of secondary school to attend university and create positive social change in their communities.
